Bringing gender diversity and experimentation to technology tutorials, one tutorial at a time.

Our Goal

Ah, the ever-familiar journey through the vast expanse of YouTube technology tutorials, where tech titans reign supreme in gaming chairs, greeting us with “Heeey Guys!” before dazzling us with their expertise. Yet, amidst expensive hardware and booming confidence, we find ourselves adrift in a sea of mansplaining, where our quest for knowledge is often met with a one-sided spectacle that fails to resonate with our diverse experiences and perspectives in the tech realm.

In 2022, driven by dissatisfaction with the status quo within online technology education, we began reaching out to our network of filmmakers, designers, developers, researchers and artists. We discovered that many friends and colleagues, particularly those who don’t identify as cis-male, shared our frustrations and yearned for alternatives. Recognising the wealth of expertise within our circles across various tech fields, we proposed an experiment: Let's reimagine the technology tutorial together. And thus, Brave Technology Tutorials in its raw form was born

Our Pilot

We developed it over a 10-month period spanning from 2023 to 2024, resulting in the creation of six tutorials. Our primary goal was to explore and expand the technology tutorial through a collaborative process, viewing it as a film genre that can encompass humour, spontaneity, suspense, and take place in unconventional settings, all while maintaining an accessible tone of sharing.

Additionally, we embraced a broad interpretation of technology, which includes analog DIY techniques. In our films, we strive to feature software and hardware that is open source, freeware, or affordable to acquire. We also encourage the use of common tools that can be borrowed.

Our Language

Throughout our tutorials, we're using English and German as the spoken languages. While we're aware of the colonial and imperial use of these languages, they're the languages the experts involved speak, or chose to speak due to their residence. As our platform expands, we aim to become more multilingual. Throughout this website, we rely on the language and translation skills of those who join our journey.

How We're Funded

Our content is and always will be paywall-free thanks to the support of regional and national institutions. This pilot was funded by Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Sachsen within the program “Digitalkultur” in 2023 and the development of the idea was possible with the scholarship “Digitale Vermittlungsformate”, awarded by Deutscher Künstlerbund in 2022.
